S1E10: What's In It For Me?

[00:00:00]Tyler Small:  I'm so excited for this episode, because I've been talking so much about the origin story of the five-star approach and how things came about and my learning experiences. And this episode is all about how the five-star approach can benefit you. So very excited to jump into this. There's two big categories here.

[00:00:23] One is your contribution to the organization  the other is your contribution to you. So to start off with the contribution to the organization, the biggest thing about the five-star approach. Is that you can get more work done and make better decisions. So let me break that down a little bit.

[00:00:45] Sometimes you may feel like you're in your cubicle or you're in your truck or you're in your workspace  you're in your home office wherever you work. And it's just hard to get the work. Done because someone else is blocking it or because someone in the back of your mind is sitting there stressing you out because you're not sure if you're doing it right, or because you're not doing it exactly the way they want, and this can slow down the work.

[00:01:17] Decision-making the five-star approach helps you make better decisions. Because you're able to collaborate with people super effectively when the relationship is there,  we're always striving for five star relationships and with a five-star relations, you can get more work done, you can make better decisions.

[00:01:39] And there's one more thing in this category of contribution that I want to talk to. And  it's about passion projects.  Gallup has been doing these surveys  and it turns out that depending on the year, roughly 84% of Americans.

[00:01:55]Are not engaged at work 84%, not engaged at work that leaves a measly, 16% of people who are actually engaged. They're passionate about work. They love coming in. They love the work they're doing. They feel interested in making that contribution there. So this is a huge problem, right? It's a problem for companies.

[00:02:20] It's a problem for individuals and in the way of contributing to your organization, I think passion projects is something that we should really consider  when you're talking about making your best contribution. So a lot of times we put our passion projects away.

[00:02:40] Maybe when we're new, we're thinking, Oh man, it would be great. If we could do this or we could do this, or we may be sitting in this meeting and the moment comes by and it's wow, if we could solve that problem, our clients would be so much happier. Or if we could solve that problem, our employees would be so much happier and it would be better for our customers.

[00:03:00] So a lot of times those passion projects get squashed because we don't have the relationships in place. And we don't know how to communicate in such a way in order to bring them to pass. The five-star approach can help you execute your passion projects. It can help those bubble to the surface  in an environment where they're actually possible and it creates a safe space for those to occur.

[00:03:29] So those three things combined is what you have to offer to the organization. Get more work done. Make better decisions and do your passion projects, that things that'll make a huge difference, a change now for your contribution to yourself.

[00:03:45]And I just want to say this in a way that might sound childish first,  but we all deal with unkindness, right? And so this one is make all the bad people go away. Or make all the mean people go away, right? So they're not going to really go away, but you're going to be able to help those people be kind to you.

[00:04:08] You're going to help them forgive you for whatever they're holding a grudge against you for. And maybe that's not much of anything at all. But you're going to be able to help them dissolve those rough feelings toward you. You're going to be able to turn them around so that you can have this really positive relationship.

[00:04:29] You may not even like them in the end, because they're just not your type of person. However, you can have a five-star relationship with that person where there's this trust or this agreement of, okay, you're going to do this. I'm going to do this. You're not going to do that. I know you're still going to do these things that irritate me.

[00:04:50] But I know why you're doing them and you're going to do these things to help me compensate. So asking other people to do things, to benefit your Workday and to give yourself a better life is a huge benefit of doing the five-star approach. Once you have that five-star relationship, there is no limit to where you can go in your organization.

[00:05:16]the next thing I want to talk about is very health related. So stress, health, diets, sleep. All these things can be adversely affected. When our boss yells at us, or somebody puts the pressure on to get a project done, and we know that it's not going to get done, or we know that we don't have the resources to get it done.

[00:05:38] But we're not able to communicate that, or we're not able to adjust that timeline. This is a relationship thing. If you're up at night, thinking about your work and stressing out about that, chances are that part of that is due to a relationship issue or relationship issue at work or outside of work.  So the five-star approach has.

[00:06:00]This effect of decreasing stress, increasing your quality of sleep, even the amount of sleep, increasing your health, and then when you're getting enough sleep and you're not all stressed out, it allows you to improve your diet because you have more conscious, productive, positive energy in your life. And you're not driven to eat donuts and coffee all day long.

[00:06:21]The next one is this very obvious thing. I want to help you get your next promotion. And so listening to this podcast are other resources that we offer. It's all designed to help you have satisfaction in your current role and or move up.  So what is the fastest route to a promotion for you? It's the five-star approach.

[00:06:46] So stick with us, you'll learn a lot about promotions and how to get a promotion. Next thing is to get your way to get more respect, to garner important resources for your projects. These things are difficult to do when you're fighting with people around you, when you're able to all get on the same side.

[00:07:09] And this is something that is foundational in the five-star approach, you're able to get your way to get your more respect and sometimes. Your way changes because you realize why people are doing what they do, and you realize that your way wasn't even possible, but you're able to pick a new way and to find something that you know will work.

[00:07:32] And to do that in a way, as people look to you with credibility and respect and they honor who you are and they honor your contribution, that's something that's really important. For not just surviving at work, but thriving and you can do all this with the five-star approach. So I hope that you've enjoyed this first season of the podcast.

[00:07:57]This is the last episode. And then we'll begin a new season on specifically ways that you can use the five-star approach to improve your work life and beyond. We'll also be interviewing a lot of people. Who have used the five-star approach or something similar. And we'll share a lot of resources with you on  how to enjoy your work life  and how you can carry that happiness with you outside of work as well.

[00:08:26] I am Tyler Small, and I hope you've enjoyed this first season of hacking emotional intelligence. I'll see you in the next one.
